Ongoing COVID-19 Safety Precautions - Undergraduate Students

To: W&L Undergraduate Students
From: The COVID-19 Committee
Date: Friday, September 4

As President Dudley mentioned in his message to the community earlier today, we are writing with details on the revised visitor policy that is effective today. We also join the president in offering our thanks for the hard work and sacrifices our students, faculty and staff have made in order to bring so many of you back for a successful start to the academic year. It certainly has not been life as usual on our campus, and we very much appreciate the efforts you have all made to help keep one another and the greater community safe.

We hope that allowing our students to visit with each other outside their core group of housemates - while continuing to follow all requirements for distancing and face coverings - will allow you to continue building the lasting friendships and sense of community that are so much a part of the W&L experience.

However, it is critical that we take this step slowly and cautiously, and that we not let the results of our arrival testing and current low numbers of positive cases give us a false sense of security. The current environment, and our ability to remain on campus for the full term, is tenuous and subject to change at a moment's notice. The decisions we make as individuals in the coming days can and will impact how we complete the Fall Term.

Please understand that although W&L students outside your core group of housemates are now allowed to visit your residence, you should be mindful of the capacity of your space to safely distance. In order to maintain at least a six foot distance, each person requires at least 36 square feet. It's also important to note that this revision to the policy applies only to current W&L students. No outside visitors are allowed in student residences, on or off campus, at this time, including students from other colleges, W&L students who are currently on leave of absence, and family members.

In addition, the following regulations remain in place for the foreseeable future:

  • No indoor gatherings, on or off campus, of more than 10 people
  • No outdoor gatherings, on or off campus, of more than 25 people
  • No visitors other than current W&L students in residences, including residential halls, townhouses, apartments, Greek houses, and off-campus housing
  • Face coverings required at all gatherings, at all times, unless you are outdoors and more than six feet apart
  • Physical distancing of at least six feet is required at all times, in all locations, indoors and out

You should simply treat every person as if they have COVID-19, and act accordingly by taking the necessary precautions. Public Safety and Residential Life will be strictly enforcing all requirements to help keep the community safe. We continue to ask that you be respectful of Residential Life staff who are in the challenging position of enforcing these requirements.

As a reminder, failure to comply will lead to sanctions by the university, including: fines, conduct probation, and removal from on-campus classes and on-campus housing. Failure to be respectful of Residential Life staff will result in an additional conduct charge.

Again, we thank you for all of your efforts and we look forward to the rest of Fall Term.
