COVID-19 Committee Update and PPE Request Form

The June 26 Covid-19 update stated that W&L's plan for returning students, faculty and staff to campus this academic year must be reviewed and approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). The university has submitted the plan to SCHEV, and it is available pending state approval on our COVID-19 Resources website. President Dudley will announce the final decision on our approach to the academic year in July, based on the latest government and health guidance.

Although we do not yet have a final decision, now that the university's plan has been submitted to SCHEV we anticipate being able to provide more frequent, detailed communications to our community around planning for Fall Term as it continues to evolve.

Personal Protective Equipment

The university will provide all benefit-eligible employees with two reusable cotton face masks. W&L will also provide faculty members with one face shield to facilitate in-person teaching. In order to receive these supplies in a timely manner, you must complete the online form provided below.

Reusable masks should be laundered after every use to provide the best personal protection. As such, you may want to supplement your two complimentary masks with additional masks, as there will be a community expectation for wearing masks as we return to campus.

Additionally, W&L will provide hand sanitizers and sanitizing wipes in classrooms, shared departmental areas and other common spaces throughout campus. However, these materials will not be provided for personal offices. While employees are welcome (and encouraged) to use the provided supplies while in common areas, you will likely want to obtain a personal supply to carry with you, for your office, car and home.

The COVID Sourcing and Procurement Working Group has obtained supplies in bulk at very economical prices and is offering these to the W&L community at cost. By submitting the form linked in this communication, you are (1) placing your order for the complimentary supplies that will be provided to you, and (2) customizing your PPE starter kit should you want to purchase additional supplies at cost.

Kits will be assembled based on your requests and should be available by July 13, for the start of Phase II of Washington and Lee's phased return to the workplace. If you place your order by July 10, your kit will be delivered to your department, generally placed in the building where you work for your convenience.

Future Communications:

The message on June 26 also indicated that a group of students, faculty and staff is drafting a Statement of Community Expectations, which will outline principles that all members of our community will be asked to agree to as a condition of returning to and remaining on campus. Please send your suggestions to covid19@wlu.edu and those will be forwarded to the drafting group for consideration.

Look for that statement, as well other detailed information on topics such as Facilities' work to prepare campus, visual examples of how classrooms are being reconfigured, information on testing and contact tracing, and our policy dealing with public school schedules in the coming weeks.
