COVID-19 Cases on Campus

Date: September 23, 2020
Last night's results from the Monday surveillance testing yielded 17 new positive COVID-19 cases among Washington and Lee students. While this is a significant number of cases, especially for a single day, it's important to note that all 17 of the students who tested positive had previously been identified as contacts of known cases and were already quarantining at the time of their tests. 112 students and all of the employees who were tested on Monday received negative results.
There are currently 26 students in our on-campus Isolation and Quarantine (I/Q) space, and another 135 quarantining elsewhere. Of those 135, some are quarantining in place in their on-campus or off-campus residences and others have opted to go home to quarantine. Our Student Health Center staff continue to be in communication with the Central Shenandoah Health District for guidance and to report all positive cases. You can access current testing data on W&L's COVID-19 Testing Dashboard.
We want to thank all of you who have been working hard to abide by the COVID-19 restrictions. We know this is not easy, and we appreciate your continued vigilance in following all guidance around face coverings, physical distancing, hygiene, and limiting of close contacts, as this continues to be the best approach to minimizing the potential spread of the virus. Continue to treat everyone around you as if they have COVID-19 - whether or not they have symptoms - and act accordingly. All of us working together to keep one another safe gives us the best chance of finishing our Fall Term on campus.
