There's nothing like a campus visit to learn whether W&L is right for you.

Located in Lexington, Virginia, our campus is known for its beauty and historical significance. Picturesque yet vital, Lexington is home to fine restaurants, charming shops and a lively arts scene.

Our proximity to the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains provides students abundant opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Charlottesville and Roanoke are within about an hour's drive, and Washington, D.C. is just three hours away.

Student led campus tours and information sessions with admission officers are held year-round for all prospective students and may be scheduled online.

High school seniors may also schedule an admissions interview and a class visit by calling our office at 540-458-8710.

Can't Make it to Lexington?

We understand if you can't make it to W&L for a visit. You can explore campus with our interactive map or by checking out the week's activities in Scene on Campus.

With alumni volunteers in 102 cities in the U.S. and abroad, there's sure to be an Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) representative near you, making a W&L interview for seniors more readily accessible. On-campus interviews with an Admissions staff member and off-campus interviews with an AAP member are valued equally in our admissions process.

Learn More About Lexington

How does a school become a home? How does the world become your classroom? At W&L, your education is just the beginning. Find out more about what it's like to live and learn in Lexington from current students in the videos below.

Our goal is to get to know you as well as possible through your application, in hopes of understanding the degree to which you would benefit from and contribute to the W&L community. W&L offers a binding Early Decision program and a non-binding Regular Decision program. Each has separate deadlines, so you can choose the option that is best for you.

There are two ways of applying. W&L is a member of the Common Application, a shared form allowing you to submit one application to multiple colleges. Most W&L applicants will use the Common Application to apply. In addition, W&L is a partner college of the QuestBridge organization. If you complete a QuestBridge application, you may have it sent to W&L. We are pleased to review either the Common Application or the QuestBridge application.

The optional Johnson Scholarship application is found on the W&L Writing Supplement to the Common Application. QuestBridge applicants are not required to submit the additional Johnson Scholarship application.

A Word About Standardized Tests

All applicants to W&L, including international students, are required to submit self-reported or official results of either the SAT or the ACT. But here's the good news:

  • Your test scores are only one of the factors W&L evaluates in its holistic review of your application. We know you're more than your scores.
  • Writing scores are not required on either exam.
  • We "super score" both the SAT and ACT. This means we will combine your best section scores from multiple test sittings to produce your highest SAT or ACT score.
  • SAT Subject Tests are not required for admission to W&L.

For more information about submitting test scores either through self-reporting or officially, and for information about international applicant testing requirements, please view our full test policy.

Financial Aid

Our mission is to make a Washington and Lee education affordable for all admitted students:

All First-Year applicants, including domestic, international, and undocumented students, are eligible and encouraged to apply for our university need-based grants and merit scholarships. Transfer students are eligible and encouraged to apply for university need-based grants.

At Washington and Lee we will meet 100 percent of your demonstrated need entirely through grants and student employment. No loan will be included in meeting any part of your demonstrated need.

In addition, the W&L Promise guarantees grant packages equal to or greater than full tuition to any undergraduate student admitted to Washington and Lee with a family income below $100,000 and assets typical for their income.

Washington and Lee is a QuestBridge partner college, a national organization dedicated to connecting the country's brightest students from low-income backgrounds with this country's leading higher education institutions.

Washington and Lee's comprehensive merit award, the Johnson Scholarship, recognizes leadership, service and outstanding academic achievement. Any first-year applicant may be considered for a Johnson Scholarship by submitting a complete Common Application, including the W&L Writing Supplement to the Common Application, by December 1st. All QuestBridge finalists are automatically considered for the Johnson Scholarship.

About 200 finalists will be invited to campus for the Johnson Scholarship Competition in early March, and all costs associated with attending the competition will be paid by W&L. Up to 44 entering first-year students will be named Johnson Scholars. Johnson Scholars receive awards covering at least tuition, room and board - and possibly more depending on the family's financial circumstances. In addition, each Johnson Scholar receives funding to support summer experiences, including research, service, internships and travel.
