Visiting W&L

Our Campus

The Washington and Lee campus is renowned for its beauty, charm, and historical significance. In 1972, the front campus was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior, only the third college campus in the country to be so designated.

Our Setting

Washington and Lee is located in Lexington, Virginia, a historic city of about 7,000 people in the central part of the Great Valley of Virginia. Its vibrant and historic downtown offers several notable museums as well as a wide array of locally owned shops, galleries and restaurants which provide plenty of cultural and culinary options for students and visitors. Over four million acres of national and state forests, including treasures like Shenandoah National Park and the Appalachian Trail are all within a two-hour drive.

Getting to Washington and Lee

Lexington is located at the intersection of Interstates 81 and 64. Washington and Lee is less than two miles from the interstate. The nearest airport is in Roanoke, Virginia, about 50 miles south of Lexington. Amtrak offers rail service to Staunton, Virginia, 30 miles to our north.

Annual Campus Events

W&L looks forward to welcoming alumni, family and friends to campus for several major events each year, including Hall of Fame Weekend, the Five-Star Festival, Young Alumni Weekend, Parents and Family Weekend, Law and Undergraduate Reunion Weekends and Commencement.

Dining and Lodging

From fast food to farm-to-table, Lexington offers many wonderful restaurant choices, while lodging options range from traditional hotels and charming bed-and-breakfasts to motor lodges and camp grounds. The Lexington Visitor's Center is a great place to start.

Things to Do

The Washington and Lee campus is home to the Lee Chapel and Museum, the Reeves Center and the Watson Pavilion, which houses an authentic Japanese Tea Room. From exhibits to speakers, concerts to athletic events, there is always something happening on campus, while downtown Lexington offers plenty of museums, shops and outdoor attractions to fit every interest.
